I live in Victoria, BC and have found that the following references are of value. While every library will have different resources this list may give you some ideas. Victoria Genealogical Society Library 1. CAN PUB -- Finding Aid #300 - an overview of all Canadian censuses - lists year, description, location and film numbers. 2. CAN (ON) CRO -- Indexes to Ontario Census Records (1987) - a checklist published censuses to 1891. 3. CAN HIL -- Census Returns 1666 - 1891 - gives microfilm numbers for each year, by enumeration district. 4. CAN (ON) ONT -- Counties and Townships of Southern Ontario - lists counties and townships - includes county maps. 5. CAN (ON) PUB -- Ontario Census of 1842 - by counties and township lists the microfilm numbers and indicates which are missing. 6. CAN (ON) SAR -- 1842 Census Records for Lanark County - lists all names and details. 7. CAN (ON) PUB -- Ontario Census of 1861 - lists by county and township, microfilm numbers and number of pages of each return. 8. CAN PUB -- 1881 Finding Aid - Census of 1881 - lists all enumeration districts and microfilm numbers. 9. CAN PUB -- 1891 Finding Aid - Census of 1891 - lists all enumeration districts and microfilm numbers. 10. Vol 7,#1, from "The Ontario Registry" -- Page 20 - 1797 Census for Augusta. 11. CAN (ON) CRO -- Early Ottawa Valley Records (1988) - has some early censues and census like lists - eg. military records giving name, age lot and concession. 12. REFERENCE SECTION -- The Central Canadians 1600 -1900 - alphabetic list of names listed in many other sources eg. voters lists, directories, census returns. Victoria Public Library - Central Branch - Broughton St. 13. 929.371xxx -- 1871 Census Indexes for all southern Ontario Counties - 33 volumes 14. 929.3713 JAC -- Upper Canada 1848 -1850 Ontario (Newcastle, Huron & Johnstown Districts) - index of the names of heads of families in these censuses. 15. 929.3713 EIG -- 1848 and 1850 Canada West (Ontario) Census Index -index of the names of heads of families. 16. 929.1025713 -- A Genealogists Guide to Ontario's Counties and Townships. 17. 016.929 GIL -- Genealogy and Local History to 1900 - catalogue of the CIHM microfiche collection (at UVIC McPherson library) - has many useful resources. 18. 317.1 CAN -- Canada Almanac (year) - from 1848 on they have many interesting lists eg. Post Offices and Post Masters, names of clergy and their location and some maps showing current boundaries. |
