Each census enumeration district (eg town, city or township) is divided into a number of smaller areas. These sub-districts usually have between 10 and 15 pages of personal census and there can be a large number of sub-districts in an enumeration area, depending on popuation numbers, but usually there are about 5 to 10 sub-districts. Two Schedules from this census are available on microfilm - 1. Population and 2. Buildings and Lands, Churches and Schools. Each of the sub-districts usually begins with Schedule 2. In some other provinces or territories the two scheduels were separated from each other and placed on different films but in the same order. If you know an exact street address or the concession and lot numbers of the property you can speed up your search by first reading Schedule 2 and only reading the Personal Schedule for the sub-districts that match your property. Of special interest in this census are the 'date of birth', 'year they came to Canada' (if born elsewhere), and the 'relation to the head of family'. The date of birth should be accepted with caution because you do not know who was the informant, if they were telling the truth or if they knew the truth. It seems that many inaccurate dates were given. NOTE: Parts of this census have either had the ink fade or has been poorly photographed leaving many pages difficult or impossible to read.
