Canadian Troops to South Africa, 1899 - 1902

Fourth Contingent

THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONSTABULARY
(CANADIAN CONTINGENT THERETO)
A permanent mounted force for the maintenance of order and public security in the Orange River Colony and the Transvaal Colony. To act as a District Mounted Police in time of peace, as a military force in time of war, and available for service in any part of British South Africa.
In the Spring of 1901, the British authorities recruited in Canada 1,208 Non-Commissioned Officers and men for the said force, comprising twelve squadrons, as follows:
"A" and "B" Sqds., enlisted in British Columbia
"C" and "D" Sqds., enlisted in North-West Territories
"E" and "F" Sqds., enlisted in Manitoba
"G" Sqd., enlisted in Manitoba and Ontario
"H" and "I" Sqds., enlisted in Ontario
No "J" Sqd.
"K" Sqd., enlisted in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
"L" Sqd., enlisted in New Brunswick.
"M" Sqd., enlisted in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince
Edward Island
PERIOD OF SERVICE: Three years from date of attestation in South Africa. On completion thereof two years re-engagement if desired by party engaged. After five years' service re-engagement by the year. In both cases conditional upon the approval of the officer commanding the division.
If the address of a person serving in that force be not positively known by the writer of a communication the latter should be sent to the care of the Chief Staff Officer, South African Constabulary Headquarters, Transvaal, South Africa.

Before its departure this force was inspected at different times by His Excellency the Governor-General, the Honourable the Minister of Militia and Defence, and the General Officer Commanding the Canadian Militia. It sailed from Halifax on H.M. transport Montfort 28th March 1901, and reached Cape Town on the 25th April following.
