Introduction -- Surname Index

GAUDIN Marie-Agnès Sex: F
Born 1774-08-07 at Pointe-aux-Trembles
Age: Alleged: 100 Verified: 92
Died: 1867-11-12 Buried: Pointe-aux-Trembles
Remarks: The case of Marie-Agnes Gaudin (No. 29) presents in the settlement of
the reputed age, one of those errors as to identity which are so common. The
record of interment gives the age as 100 years and five months, on the authority
of a record of the birth of Marie-Agnes Gaudin, daughter of Jacques Gaudin and
of Marie-Agnes Darois, born on the 13th June, 1767, which would really give the
reputed age of upwards of 100 to this Marie-Agnes Gaudin, if it were she who
lived till November, 1867. But the Marie-Agnes who was born in 1767, died on the
7th July, of the same year, and her younger sister, the Marie-Agnes in question,
did not come into the world until more than seven years after. This sort of
error, as may be seen, is a fruitful source of the mistakes of those who, in
investigations of this kind, do not make it a rule to collect and examine all
the records of the births and deaths of the brothers and sisters, and even of
the ascendants, when there is room to apprend a blunder in that direction.

JOUBERT Pierre Sex: M
Occupation: Cordounier
Born 1701-07-15 at Charlesbourg
Age: Alleged: 105 Verified: 113

Remarks: The case of Pierre Joubert (No. 38) deserves special mention, being
that of the individual of greatest ascertained longevity, and one of the few
whose age, instead of being exaggerated, was called less than it really was and
specially on account of the doubt wbich might be strained against its identity.
Pierre Joubert was son of Pierre Joubert, alias Gibarne, alias Joubarne,
(the use of these three names is made indifferently in the Registers) and of
Marie-Magdeleine Boesmier; he was the third and last child of the first marriage
of the father, who was married three times and had twelve children in all, by
his three wives. There did, not exist in Canada, during the period concerned,
any other family of the name of Joubert, Joubarne or Gibarne, to which the
subject of this notice can be referred, than the family here concerned. This
fact has been easily ascertained, inasmuch as the whole accumulated number of
marriages, births and deaths amounted at the beginning of the 18th century, in
the Province of Quebec, to an aggregate
of only 28,358, which are all tabulated in the published volume of the
Dictionnaire Généalogique (the only finished part of this work), and the
population was then only aoout 16,000 souls. One Jean Joubert dit
Desfontaines died at Three Rivers in 1685, without posterity. One Jacques
Joubert, married to one Madeleine Duval, had, out of nine children, one, the
fourth, named Pierre, born on the 12th May, 1686, and who died on the 4th
September, 1687, at Lachine.
The following is the filiation of the Pierre of the Joubert family, to the
grandson of tbe de cujus.
Pierre I, father of the de cujus, born at Quebec, on the 8th October, 1670,
son of Jean Joubert and of Madeleine Testu, both settlers from France, married
at Quebec, on the 4th of November, 1669, each being twenty-eight years of age.
Pierre II, the de cujus, born at Charlesbourg on the 15th of July, 1701, son
of Pierre I and of Magdoloine Boesmier, alias Boesmé, married at Charlesbourg on
the 22nd 0ctober, 1696, at the ages of 26 and 19 respectively.
Pierre III, son of the de cujus, born at Montreal on the 9th March, 1732,
son of Pierre II and of Agathe Jarry, who were married at Montreal on the 17th
of November, 1727, at the ages of 26 and 24 respectively. He appears to have
been 82 years of age at the death of his father the de cujus. The proof of
identity, between father and son which has been found conclusive in the abscence
of the registration, not yet discovered, of the death of Pierre III, is
hereinafter given.
Pierre IV, grandson of the de cajus, born at Montreal on the 11th of August,
1715, son of Pierre III, and of Josephte Belier alias Telier. He was 39 years,
old at the death of his grandfather, the de cujus.
It may be affirmed, with certainty, that no individual of the name of
Joubert, Jouberne or Gibarne, can affect the question of identity, here treated,
other then the individuals hereinbefore mentioned. In the registration of the
marriage of Pierre Joubert with Agathe Jarry, in Montreal, the person of the
centenarian is thus identified: "Pierre Joubert, agé de 26 ans, fils de Pierre
Joubert et de Madeleine Boimer, ses père et
mère de laparoisse de Charlesbourg." The record of the interment of Pierre
Joubert (see the dates in the tables) speak of him as being, about 105 years
old, whilst, in reality, he was 113, as has just been proved. This record,
contrary to custom in the registers, says: "Have buried ...... Pierre, father of
Pierre François ........ This unusual reference to identity, by mention of the
paternity of the deceased, in the record of interment, cannot receive a
reasonable explanation otherwise than in the presumption of the fact that this
son was himself, at the death of his father, an old man of 82. This presumption,
sustained by the history of the family based on authentic registers, has
appeared as completing the proof of identity of the person. The addition of the
distinctive name of François, added to the baptismal name of Pierre III, is
entirely in conformity with the habits of the French Canadiens and adds a now
strength to that portion of the evidence.

LECOMPTE François Sex: F
Born 1699-08-18 at Québec
Age: Alleged: 110 Verified: 94
Date of First Marriage: 1719-08-26
Died: 1793-09-10 Buried: St. Pierre, Ile d'Orléans
Remarks: The case of Françoise Lecompte (No. 45) is one which, as being
connected with one of those anecdotes relating to great personages, are brought
as proofs of the extreme ages alleged, on the supposition that an investigation
must have preceded the participation of the personage in the matter, in
reference to which he is given as an authority. Françoiso Lecompte, widow Dapil,
then, passed as being upwards of a hundred, and as she lived in the Island of
Orleans, a short distance from Quebec, a desire was felt by His Royal Highness
the Duke of Kent, then in garrison in Quebec (from 1791 to 1794,) to visit the
centenarian, and the story says, to prove how lively and nimble the centenarian
still was, that she requested His Royal Highness to grant her the favour of
allowing her to dance a minuet with the son of her King, which the Prince, with
his usual kindness, granted. (See Les Memoires de M DeGaspé, page 31.)
This is probably correct, minus the word centenarian, for Françoise was only
94 in 1793, the year of her death. She was born on the 18th of August, 1699; was
married on the 26th of August, 1719, to Augustin Dupil, to whom she bad fifteen
children. She was the daughter of Antoine Lecompte and Marie
Poiré, and was the first born of four brothers and sisters, the mother having
died on the 25th of December, 1702, shortly after the birth of her last child.
The respectable Madame Dupil thought, like every body else, that she was over
one hundred years old, when dancing, at the remarkable age of 94, a minuet with
the father of Her Majesty. The subtraction required, after the investigation, to
be made from her supposed age does not prevent the anecdote from being
distinguished from a common place story.

LEFEBVRE-BOULANGER Mart. Sex: M
Born 1700-03-21 at St. Michel, Bellechuse
Age: Alleged: 106 Verified: 81

LEMIEUX Angélique Sex: F
Born 1782-03-25 at St. Joseph, Lévis
Age: Alleged: 102 Verified: 95

LISOTTE Rosalie Sex: F
Born 1738-02-20 at St. Roch des Aulnets
Age: Alleged: 109 Verified: 109
Date of First Marriage: 1759-02-05
Died: 1847-03-05 Buried: Rivière-du-Loup
Remarks: Married for a second time - date unknown.
The case of Marie-Rosalie Lisotte (No. 48) is the second in age of all in
the table, she having lived for 109 years. She was the ninth of the fifteen
children of Nicolas Lisotte, and Marie-Magdeleine Angelique Miville dit
Deschéne, married on the 3rd May, 1724. Marie-Rosalie was the only one of that
name in her family; she was married twice; the first time in the parish of St.
Roch des Aulnets, on the 5th of February, 1759, at the age of 21, to Joseph
Miguot dit Labry, then a second time to Joseph Lagacé. The
record of this last marriage not having been found, the date cannot be
established. If it took place, as seems probable, in the parish of St Roch des
Aulnet, it must have teken place within the period elapsed between 1765 and
1776, for which period one of those gaps spoken of exists in the parish
registers, and only supplemented by the duplicates of the Prothonotaries for the
three years which elapsed between July, 1771, and June, 1774. The identification
of Marie-Rosalio is, however, put beyond doubt, even in the absence of this
record of the second marriage.
When the existence of two families with the same name might lead to
confusion, the registers of both families have been consulted, as in the case of
Rosalie Lisotte (No. 48), for instance: Two brothers Lisotte were married to two
Miville, cousins, but the two heads of the family, were named respectively
Nicholas and Joseph, the two women respectively Magdeleine and Marie Jossphte.
The first pair were married in 1724, the other in 1730. Nicholas-Magdeleine had
fifteen children of whom Rosalie was one;
Joseph-Josephte had twelve children none of whom was called Rosalie. No girl
Lisotte, other than Rosalie, was married, first, to Joseph Mignault dit Labry,
and the second time to Joseph Lagacé. Tradition and evidence have traced the
history of this woman, living in the midst of the members of her family and
amongst her acquaintances, in the Parish of St. Roch des Aulnets, where she was
born, and in the Parish of Riviére du Loup, to which she afterwards went with
some of her relations and where she died. So with the
others.
